Boosting your fertility with Classical Five-Element Acupuncture

There is nothing more simple and natural than the creation of new life. We witness it all around us. For many people the question of fertility and the inevitability of children are barely questioned. It feels like our own birth-right, and we plan our lives as if we have the choice to engage with this process as and when we decide.

The truth is there is no guarantee we will all bear children. The creation of new life is a gift of nature and although not a right, every human being has a right to try for a child. The ancient Chinese as with many ancient cultures were well aware of this fact and showed great gratitude when conception occurred, but more importantly they understood that for this gift to come they had a responsibility to create the right conditions within themselves.

For us to be fertile, much like the farmer who ploughs and prepares the soil, we can do a lot to help create the right conditions within us. The Ancient Chinese observed that nature produced new life year after year, and by observing the natural laws developed a health care system that would assist nature in keeping people well, productive and most importantly – fertile.

I have been working with men and women for over 20 years, who for many reasons have not been able to conceive or realise a child of their own. For many this journey is painful, frustrating, and deeply saddening, but worst of all they can often feel a great sense of injustice, that somehow they have been left out or forsaken. This hopelessness that many feel as each month and year rolls on is often rooted in a growing belief that somehow they have been singled out and will not contribute to nature’s great plan of procreation.

Nature wants us to make babies. It will do everything in its power for this to happen, but sometimes something or someone gets in the way. My job and the job of everyone in the field of infertility, be they an acupuncturist, a doctor, a psychotherapist or a friend, is to help move the person in body, mind and spirit to the place where the natural force of creation can dominate and have its expression. This force that creates and allows all life to thrive is always present to all of us equally. We simply need to create the right conditions within ourselves to allow it to move through us equally.

I am an optimist. I believe there is always hope. Of course we need to be blessed with the correct equipment to procreate – a physical reality, and our bodies need the intelligence to govern a process that is precise and rhythmic, but most importantly, deep within us we need the spark of life we call the spirit that ignites and fuels something as powerful as creation itself.

My responsibility as an acupuncturist is to help people access who they are at core, help them dispel any myths and untrue stories they may carry about themselves and help them make choices that are congruent with their sense of self. When we live and function from this place of authenticity, not only do we experience and celebrate ourselves but have a greater potential to create new life.

You may well ask; how is it people with no self awareness, destructive lifestyles and unhealthy ideals still manage to conceive? I do not know and cannot comment as it is not for me or anyone else to judge why nature follows a certain path, but sometimes the life-force is so great nothing will stop it. Think of the seed that falls on infertile soil, shielded from the sun, dry from lack of rain but still grows and finds its way through to become a tree.

Every day in my clinic I see patients improving their physical and mental health, changing their lives for the better and falling pregnant against all odds.

There are no acupuncture points that improve fertility directly, just as IVF (in vitro-fertilisation) is no guarantee of a pregnancy. No on/off buttons that make something happen. Instead the acupuncture points serve as a pivot to allow something to change for the better.

Our cultural term, ‘falling pregnant’ suggests our understanding that it is an involuntary act, and yet when we are not successful we jump into the driving seat of ‘trying to get pregnant’ which inevitably creates tension and stress.

Classical Five-Element Acupuncture, which is a distinct and unique style of acupuncture, addresses the issues of ‘unexplained infertility’, and offers a very different approach to this problem as it recognises the importance of a healthy body, mind and spirit.

uterine Fibroids and Infertility - How Fibroids Affect Pregnancy

If you are contemplating starting a family and have fibroids, you may be wondering what the issues are surrounding uterine fibroids and infertility and how fibroids affect pregnancy. Although there can be a connection, the majority of women will go on to have successful pregnancies and normal deliveries.

Being aware of having fibroids is a good thing. Many women go through years of trying for a family without even knowing that they have fibroids, and and that this is the cause of their problems. This is such a pity as there are positive steps which can be taken to minimize the impact on a forthcoming pregnancy.

Firstly, you should be aware that fibroids rarely increase in size during pregnancy. So, if you know that your fibroids are small and are not growing in places which could potentially affect a pregnancy, such as close to the opening of the cervix or near to the entrance of the fallopian tubes, chances are that any impact will be minimal.

Problems relating to uterine fibroids and infertility usually center around the size and positioning of fibroids. Two ways how fibroids can affect pregnancy are:-

1. Larger fibroids growing just beneath the womb's lining can distort the uterine cavity which can either make implantation impossible, or can cause an early miscarriage.

2. Fibroids positioned at the entrance to the cervix or fallopian tubes can block the passage of sperm.

If you know you have fibroids and would like to start a family, conventional treatments can be unsuitable and not conducive to a healthy pregnancy. Surgical methods to remove fibroids can leave scarring and weakening of the uterine wall, both of which can reduce the chances of a successful pregnancy. However, there are ways to prepare your body which will only have a positive impact.

Eating a good, healthy diet will naturally help, as will losing a few pounds if you happen to be overweight. In addition, there are positive steps you can take to help to shrink fibroids naturally.

To learn more about the relationship between fibroids and pregnancy and for details of a completely guaranteed 7 Step Plan for Shrinking Fibroids, you may be interested in visiting my website Shrink Fibroids There you will find comprehensive information about various treatments and solutions as well as how uterine fibroids and infertility can be connected. Combining Acupuncture & IVF Treatment for better results

There are many "alternative" treatments addressing fertility issues, which lead to the question "Does the combined treatments of acupuncture and IVF achieve more successful results?"

Acupuncture through its history has been attributed in helping a variety of ailments, all the while having an overall healing effect on the body. Acupuncture is increasingly being used to help with infertility. Women wishing to fall pregnant but struggling to conceive are turning to acupuncture, alongside IVF or donor-egg transfer.

The truth is that acupuncture although not generally used as a primary therapy for most fertility problems, is fast becoming a valuable support therapy for infertility.

Acupuncture can also treat a number of fertility disorders. Recent studies show that acupuncture has a positive effect on the female reproduction system by increasing and regulating blood supply to both ovaries and uterus, and promoting regular ovulation.

Combined with herbs acupuncture can treat elevated follicle stimulating hormones, repeated pregnancy loss, unexplained infertility, luteal phase defect, and male factor including men affected with sperm-DNA-fragmentation, among others.

Studies conducted regarding the benefits of acupuncture combined with infertility treatments have shown mixed results. It can be shown that acupuncture and infertility treatments together are substantially better than IVF treatments without acupuncture. The advantages that have been observed and the fact that acupuncture is both harmless and readily available, is regularly offered as an additional treatment to conventional infertility treatments.

One such study, (by Dr Eric Manheimer of the University of Maryland School of Medicine) indicated that the use of acupuncture may increase the success of IVF therapy by as much as 65%, with additional studies in Europe and the US offering signs that acupuncture treatments given on the day of implantation in IVF therapy can improve the success of implantation. On the other hand other studies have found no clear correlation between successful implantation and acupuncture – but have gone on to say that acupuncture is safe and would do no harm.

Acupuncture treatment length can depend on the issue at hand and consists of a number of visits with a licensed acupuncture provider, who will help you determine if acupuncture will help to you. Acupuncture can assist:

a. three to four months before insemination by in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or donor-egg transfer, is a time to start acupuncture to get the optimum time for its therapeutic effects; and

b. acupuncture treatments are timed according to the phases of your cycle. The chance for a successful treatment increases if you can predict your ovulation or the start of your luteal phase. It takes approximately 120 days for an egg to mature before the ovary releases it during a cycle. This means that it may take up to six months of regular acupuncture treatments before your fertility improves.

c. the first twelve weeks period to help prevent miscarriage;

Acupuncture and infertility treatments do complement each other.  Acupuncture helps to provide patients with the best level of comfort and relief, and can possibly reduce the impact of the most challenging aspects of IVF and other infertility treatments.

Tips on Planning Your Pregnancy

A body of evidence continues to build about the effects of chronic stress on a woman's ovulation and a man's sperm production," write Drs Rosenwaks and Goldstein in A Baby at Last!: The Couple's Complete Guide to Getting Pregnant–from Cutting-Edge Treatments to Commonsense Wisdom. "Chronic stress alters brain signals to the hypothalamus, which in turn affects the hypothalamus's signals to the pituitary and the pituitary's signals to the ovaries and testicles." Chronic stress can inhibit the body's reproductive organs — it can interfere with your menstrual cycle, egg hatching, and ovulation phases – and it can even cause bodily changes that make you think you're ovulating when you're not. If you're planning for a baby, try to relax as much as possible.

Timing sexual intercourse

The most important factor when trying to conceive is to have sexual intercourse during the woman's fertile phase - that is, the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. New life begins when an egg (ovum) from a woman is fertilised by sperm from a man. Ovulation occurs around 14 days before the start of the menstrual period, when an egg is released from one of the ovaries. Conception occurs when the egg is met by a sperm in the fallopian tube. Having sex in the days prior to ovulation (when the woman is aware of a slippery sensation at the vulva) and on the day of ovulation (usually the last day of the slippery sensation) increases the odds of pregnancy. Couples who have sexual intercourse around the middle or later stages of the woman's menstrual cycle may have already missed the egg, which has a short lifespan.

Watch your figure – but don't get "pencil thin"!

Finding your healthy body weight is one of the best tips for women ready to get pregnant. If you're just starting to try to conceive, you may think that it's a pain in the tushie to lose weight. But trust me — the real pain in the tushie comes when you have to go for infertility workups, fertility tests, and infertility procedures. Losing a few pounds is easy peasy compared to that! Watching your weight can increase your fertility levels, which will help you get pregnant faster.

Eat foods that increase your pregnancy chances

There are certain foods that increase female fertility, such as the healthy unsaturated fats in nuts, olive oil, and avocados. And, certain foods increase sperm count, such as seafood, leafy green veggies, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal. Eating a balanced, nutritious diet affects your eggs, menstrual cycle, and ovulation. Feed your body with healthy foods, and you'll make the journey towards planning for a baby that much smoother.

Diet

There is no special diet that improves the odds of conception, but now is the time to start eating a healthier range of foods including fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats. There is no evidence to support the theory that taking supplements of vitamin C boosts fertility. It is recommended that women increase their intake of folate for a few months prior to conceiving and throughout the first few weeks of pregnancy, since this B-group vitamin has been found to reduce the risk of certain birth defects. Good sources of folate include leafy green vegetables. Folate supplements are also recommended.

Take care of your health problems

Are you struggling with health issues, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, ovarian syndromes, and endometriosis? Try to get them under control because can affect your chances of pregnancy. Explore alternative treatments for your health issues, if possible, and always ask your doctor if the medications he or she is prescribing will affect your current or future chances of getting pregnant.

Stop smoking (even if you're not ready to get pregnant)

This is the easiest pregnancy tip of all — if you're a nonsmoker! "Smoking constricts blood vessels, including those that feed the ovaries, which accelerates the loss of eggs," says Dr Sherman Silber of the Infertilty Center of St. Louis — he wrote How to Get Pregnant. "Sure, women who smoke can get pregnant – when they're young. But smoking can cause you to become infertile earlier than you would as a nonsmoker."

How can you put a limit on learning more? The next section may contain that one little bit of wisdom that changes everything.

Find powerful herbal remedies Dry Skin and Body Odour

A crucial step in planning a pregnancy is to begin limiting your caffeine intake, stop smoking immediately if applicable, and if you use any recreational drugs, stop using them before you try to get pregnant. Any unnatural substances can be very harmful to you and your unborn baby.

When planning a pregnancy, money always figures into the equation. The ideal situation is to be financially secure before starting a family. However, it is extremely difficult to plan for everything. There will always be something or some unexpected situation that will require additional money. While you can try to prevent money problems from occurring, when money is the issue there is never going to be the perfect time or the ideal lifestyle.

There are many factors to consider in regard to your financial situation when planning a pregnancy. Daycare can be extremely expensive. If you will return to work after the birth of your child, you will need to include the cost of daycare into your post-pregnancy budget. If you decide to stay home with your child, decide which spouse should stay home and how your family will survive financially on one income. Also, factor in the cost of diapers, formula and baby food. These can easily add up to six hundred dollars extra per month or more.

Every expectant parent wants a healthy, happy baby. Planning your pregnancy in advance is the best way to ensure a healthy mother and baby and avoid a negative impact on your personal and financial lives. Having a baby will change your life forever. With good planning, pregnancy can be a stress-free experience that will lead you effortlessly into the next phase of your life.
